Jessica Diane Aber, a distinguished American attorney, served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) from 2021 until her resignation in January 2025. Her sudden death on March 22, 2025, at the age of 43, has left the legal community and the nation in shock. Aber’s career was marked by dedication to justice, leadership, and significant contributions to the legal field.  

Early Life and Education

Born on September 9, 1981, Jessica Aber pursued a path in law with unwavering commitment. She began her legal career as a law clerk for Magistrate Judge M. Hannah Lauck of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2006 to 2007. Following this, she worked as an associate at McGuireWoods from 2007 to 2008. In 2009, Aber entered public service as an Assistant United States Attorney in the EDVA. Her dedication and expertise led her to serve as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice from 2015 to 2016. She then became the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division for the EDVA, a position she held until 2021.

In March 2021, Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner recommended Aber for the position of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. President Joe Biden nominated her on August 10, 2021, and her nomination was confirmed by the Senate on October 5, 2021. She officially assumed office on October 12, 2021.  

Tenure and Notable Cases

As U.S. Attorney, Aber supervised the prosecution of all federal crimes and the litigation of civil matters in which the United States had an interest. She led a staff of approximately 300 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel across four divisions located in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News, serving over six million residents.  

During her tenure, Aber oversaw several high-profile cases, including investigations into Russian interference and the prosecution of a CIA leaker.  Aber announced her resignation as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, effective January 20, 2025, at 11:59 pm.

On March 22, 2025, Aber was found dead in her Alexandria, Virginia, home. The Alexandria Police Department responded to a call at 9:18 a.m., reporting an unresponsive woman. Upon arrival, officers discovered Aber deceased at the scene. The cause and circumstances of her death are currently under investigation, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia responsible for determining the official cause.

The news of Aber’s death elicited an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues and officials. Erik S. Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, expressed profound sorrow, stating,

We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber. She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply .

Attorney General Pamela Bondi also conveyed her condolences, remarking,

The loss of Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of … , is deeply tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this profoundly difficult time.  

Jessica Aber’s career was characterized by a steadfast commitment to justice and public service. Her leadership and mentorship left an indelible mark on the legal community. Colleagues remember her not only for her legal acumen but also for her compassion and dedication to the principles of justice.

As of now, the investigation into Aber’s death continues. The Alexandria Police Department is working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding her untimely passing.
