Target Cuts DEI Programs Amid Political Pressure

In a surprising turn of events, Target has decided to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The Minneapolis-based retailer announced the shift on Friday, joining a growing list of corporations retreating from DEI policies under intense scrutiny from conservative groups.

This decision marks the end of several high-profile initiatives, raising eyebrows across the business and social landscapes.

Target is not alone in this trend. Other major corporations, including Walmart, Amazon, and Meta, have rolled back their DEI efforts. The Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action in colleges has further fueled the movement, encouraging conservative activists to demand changes in corporate policies.

However, not all companies have bowed to pressure. Costco recently defended its DEI initiatives, with over 98% of its shareholders voting to maintain these programs.

Critics Call Target’s Decision ‘Brand Suicide’

The decision has sparked sharp criticism, with some industry experts and social advocates calling it a misstep.

“For Target, with an inclusive audience, this is their version of brand suicide,” said Eric Schiffer, CEO of Reputation Management Consultants. Target has long been recognized for its inclusivity, attracting younger and more diverse customers.

Congressman Sylvester Turner also weighed in, stating, “Target is making a mistake by ending its DEI goals with its customer base being highly diverse.”

Goodbye to Racial Equity Action

As part of the rollback, Target is discontinuing its Racial Equity Action and Change (REACH) initiatives. These programs included a $2 billion pledge to support Black-owned businesses by 2025. The retailer had planned to add 500 Black-owned brands and fund diverse businesses through its in-house media arm, Roundel.

Additionally, Target’s “Supplier Diversity” team will now operate as “Supplier Engagement,” signaling a shift in focus to align with what the company describes as an “inclusive global procurement process.”

History of DEI Commitment

Target’s DEI journey took a significant leap in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd near its headquarters. CEO Brian Cornell described the incident as deeply personal and a call to action. Target committed to increasing Black representation in its workforce by 20% and launched initiatives to support Black entrepreneurs.

The retailer also donated $10 million to social justice organizations, including the National Urban League and African American Leadership Forum. On its website, Target proudly highlighted its efforts, stating, “We are never done,” while quoting Maya Angelou to inspire its vision for change.

Backlash from Conservative Groups

Target’s decision to wind down DEI programs comes as conservative groups intensify criticism of such initiatives. Last year, the company faced backlash over LGBTQ-themed merchandise during Pride Month, including confrontations with customers and threats to employees.

In 2016, Target took a bold stand on transgender rights by allowing employees and customers to use restrooms matching their gender identity. But the controversies surrounding DEI and inclusivity seem to have taken their toll, with Target now taking a more cautious approach.

What’s Next for Target?

Despite rolling back DEI policies, Target insists it will continue celebrating heritage months, such as Pride Month and Black History Month, through themed merchandise collections. CEO Brian Cornell recently emphasized the importance of “investing in people and creating a culture of care and growth.”

While no job cuts are associated with these changes, the move has left many wondering how it will impact Target’s reputation and relationship with its diverse customer base.
