Pete Carroll Set to Become Oldest Head Coach in NFL History

We can celebrate Pete Carroll by calling him a mastermind of the game and a relentless leader who defies age and expectations. Breaking Records at 73!

At 74, Carroll is set to surpass Romeo Crennel, who was 73 years and 199 days old when he coached his last game, becoming the oldest head coach in modern NFL history. Previously, Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs held the distinction of being the oldest active NFL coach at 66.

ESPN reports that Pete Carroll has agreed to a three-year contract with the Raiders, which includes a fourth-year team option. Before finalizing his deal with the Raiders, Carroll had interviewed for the head coach positions with the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys.Pete Carroll’s hiring marks a significant step in the Raiders’ organizational overhaul. Alongside Carroll, the team has brought in Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant GM John Spytek as their new general manager. With former quarterback Tom Brady now a part-owner, owner Mark Davis is steering the franchise toward a rebuild. A key focus for the team is securing a young quarterback, leveraging the No. 6 overall draft pick and substantial cap space ahead of the offseason.

The NFL’s coaching hiring cycle for 2025 is almost wrapped up. With Pete Carroll’s reported hiring, 30 out of 32 head coaching vacancies have been filled. The New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys remain the only teams still in search of a new leader.  Pete Carroll is taking on the Raiders’ coaching job under principal owner Mark Davis, with whom he has a personal connection, having known the late team patriarch Al Davis. He’ll also be working alongside part-owner Tom Brady.  Carroll replaces Antonio Pierce, who served as interim head coach before being promoted to full-time head coach. Pierce went 4-13 in his only full season, with the Raiders finishing last in the highly competitive AFC West. The team is now in search of a viable quarterback to lead them into the future.

Pete Carroll’s AFC West Comeback

Pete Carroll’s return to the AFC West brings him back into competition with his long-time rival, Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Over the past two decades, the two have faced off as coaches of the Seahawks and 49ers, and previously as head coaches at USC and Stanford.

Carroll’s comeback comes just one year after the Seahawks parted ways with him, hiring 37-year-old Macdonald as their first-time head coach. This followed Carroll’s 15-year tenure in Seattle, where he led the team through its most successful period in franchise history, including 12 playoff appearances, two Super Bowls, and the Seahawks’ only NFL championship at the end of the 2013 season.

Carroll spent last season out of football while the Seahawks continued to honor what was believed to be a $15 million contract extension he signed during the 2020 season.
