Danny Boyle Returns With Explosive Sequel ‘28 Years Later’ — Watch the New Trailer That’s Shaking Up the Internet

In recent news; The infected are back — and they’re more terrifying than ever.

Danny Boyle has unleashed the second official trailer for 28 Years Later, and fans of the iconic zombie franchise are already losing their minds. The gritty, post-apocalyptic world of the 28 Days Later saga is back with a vengeance, with a new cast, new horrors, and the same adrenaline-pumping intensity that redefined the zombie genre over two decades ago.

It’s British apocalypse at its most savage, Boyle declared at CinemaCon. I still love the infected. And I still love blowing shit up.

Starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes, the first film in a planned trilogy drops fans back into a UK devastated by the long-lasting impact of the rage virus. This time, survival is even more brutal — and the monsters aren’t just the ones foaming at the mouth.

A New Generation of Fear

Set almost three decades after the original outbreak, 28 Years Later reveals a world still trapped in the shadow of infection. While the rest of the globe watches in horror, a strict quarantine keeps the UK isolated — but not safe. Survivors have learned to adapt. A small group lives on an island, connected to the mainland by a single, heavily fortified causeway. But when one survivor leaves to venture into the wasteland, he uncovers dark secrets — and something even more disturbing than the infected.

The film’s eerie tagline: “They’ve evolved. So has fear.”

Garland + Boyle Reunite

Writer Alex Garland (Civil War, Ex Machina) reunites with Boyle for the first time since 28 Days Later, marking a highly anticipated creative partnership that fans have long hoped for.

It’s raw, it’s emotional, it’s terrifying,” Garland said. “We wanted to push the concept into something even more human — and more monstrous.

The film explores how both the infected and the uninfected have mutated in response to years of chaos. Don’t expect just mindless rage zombies — expect moral ambiguity, desperation, and madness among the living, too.

Murphy’s Return… Eventually

While 28 Years Later launches a new chapter with fresh faces, fans are buzzing about a possible return of original star Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Peaky Blinders), who now serves as executive producer.

Like all good things in life, Boyle teased, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.

Murphy, who recently won an Oscar for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, is confirmed to be involved in the new trilogy — but not in this first installment.

Next Up: The Bone Temple

The sequel to 28 Years Later is already in the works. Titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, it’s directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels), who gave fans a glimpse of her vision at CinemaCon.

It’s absolutely bonkers — in the best way, DaCosta said. This universe gave me space to let my freak flag fly. I’m excited to show fans something that honors the original but also breaks new ground.

The trailer is trending across social media, with fans calling it “a masterpiece in two minutes.” One Twitter user wrote,

Danny Boyle said British horror supremacy and meant it. Another joked, This trailer cured my zombie fatigue.

TikTok edits featuring the trailer’s haunting score and glimpses of Comer wielding a crossbow have already racked up millions of views. Reddit threads are filled with speculation about the virus mutating — and whether Murphy might return in a shocking post-credits scene.
